How many of you have LED Christmas lights inside or outside your house? What is the best LED Christmas light? We have not had a chance to test them all out yet, so at this time without testing a big sample size we do not want to make recommendations. If you would like to see Amazon’s list of their recommendations for the best LED Christmas lights, click here.

Advantages of LED Holiday Lights

There are many advantages of having LED holiday lights. In our opinion, the most important being a savings in money because LED lights use a fraction of the electricity of regular stringed Christmas lights. LED Christmas lights also save power, last longer, do not get as hot, are good for indoor and outdoor use, and are quickly coming down in price.

Driving around our town the past few nights, we have wondered how many people are using them. Are you using LED lights for the holidays? If so, which ones do you recommend?

Above: The Lighting Science Definity A1910001-014 LED light bulb packaging

Things did not get off to a good start with the Lighting Science Definity. While the plain white cardboard box looked undamaged and had retained its structural integrity, the LED bulb was physically loose inside the box.

Upon opening the box the problem was clear; the box and its two cardboard inserts, designed to hold the bulb base and lens vertical during shipping, were too big for the bulb. The top insert didn’t even make contact with with bulb! The bottom insert had physically torn open, most likely damaged by the motion of the bulb moving inside the box. The box itself was at least twice as big as it should be which only exacerbated the motion and force the loose bulb had during shipping.

In all fairness, the bulb itself did arrive to LED Light Review HQ undamaged and functional. The plain cardboard box is also readily recyclable. If Lighting Science used this same box design, but sized it properly to the bulb, we would have a very high packaging score. As is, the box is an almost total failure and likely results in broken, damaged, and otherwise compromised bulbs being delivered to consumers. Lighting Science needs to do better.

Above: The Lighting Science Definity A1910001-014 LED light bulb

The Lighting Science Definity A1910001-014 is a good looking LED light bulb that follows the traditional shape of an A19 incandescent light bulb. Perhaps the biggest stand out feature of the Definity A1910001-014 is its twenty-four curved cooling fins that taper into what appears to be a white ceramic bulb base. With its traditional shape and appealing overall aesthetics, the Definity A1910001-014 should be welcome in exposed settings.

The Definity A1910001-014 feels solid in the hand with tight seems and only the slightest of play between the e26 screw and the bulb base. The only other possible blemish we could find is what we believe to be a bit of white glue emerging between the bulb base and frosted polycarbonate lens.

The Lighting Science Definity A1910001-014 LED light bulb has a 180 degree light pattern making it suitable for downward light applications. Due to the lack of omni-directional light, we do not recommend the Lighting Science Definity A1910001-014 LED light bulb for table top lamps (as shown).

We were immediately smitten with the soft, pleasant, natural warm/yellow light projected by the Lighting Science Definity A1910001-014 LED light bulb. Of the two dozen LED light bulbs we have on hand, the light color of the Lighting Science Definity A1910001-014 was most similar to the Philips L-Prize, but with a softer yellow light and considerably less lumen output (395 lumens for the Lighting Science versus 940 lumens for the L-Prize). Let there be no doubt that we are very impressed with the light color and naturalness of the Lighting Science Definity A1910001-014.

CONCLUSION: 4/5

If you’re looking for a soft, pleasant, natural warm/yellow light, or want something that would work well with the light color of the Philips L-Prize at a much lower lumen output, we highly recommend the Lighting Science Definity A1910001-014 LED light bulb.

Boy do we wish we could end the conclusion right there. In order to really hit it out of the park with this product, Lighting Science must improve the packaging of the Definity A1910001-014. A strong product like the Definity A1910001-014 deserves strong packaging. That said, this bulb’s a winner. Highly recommended.

Above: The Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM LED light bulb packaging

The Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM packaging is a chunky and recycle-friendly corrugated cardboard box. What the Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM packaging lacks in aesthetic appeal, it makes up for in product protection. As you can see in the above photographs, the box looked a little roughed up when it arrived at LED Light Review, but the integrity of the packaging was still strong and completely intact. Chunky packaging indeed.

Inside the corrugated cardboard box there’s an elongated top flap which holds the bulb lens and a folded-in base insert which holds the bulb base. Again, it’s not the most exciting packaging, but it should deliver the bulb safely to your door. Consider this part of the review a yawning applause. Good job Honeywell, but maybe make this box a bit more fun and appealing next time. After all, you are trying to sell these bulbs to consumers, right?

Above: The Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM LED light bulb

Could it be that Honeywell had their aerospace division design this bulb? How else can you explain this bulb looking like a NASA space capsule? It’s also built like a tank; solid and weighty in the hand with extremely tight seems and absolutely no play between components. Very impressive build quality.

There are three parts to this bulb; a half-sphere frosted polycarbonate lens, a seemingly one-piece metal cone base with twenty-four squared-off cooling fins, and a standard E26 screw. Unless you’re a die-hard fan of the Mercury and Apollo space programs, it’s not the most appealing bulb to look at. Then again, the Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM certainly appears to be a product built to last. For that, we have to give this bulb a perfect physical product score. To the moon Honeywell!

The Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM LED light bulb has a 180 degree light pattern making it suitable for downward light applications. Due to the lack of omni-directional light, we do not recommend the Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM for table top lamps (as shown).

Left to right: Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM, 40 watt incandescent, 40 watt CFL

The light color of the Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM is extremely white, with a very subtle, yet natural, touch of pink. In fact, the Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM has the whitest light color of any LED bulb we have yet reviewed. It even makes the GE 62120 look ever so slightly yellow/warm, and that’s really saying something.

As white as the Honeywell EarthTronics LED light bulb is, the very subtle touch of pink (and it’s very subtle) really helps to make the extremely white light color of this bulb both natural and inviting. We tend to favor warmer LED light bulbs here at LED Light Review but the Honeywell EarthTronics really impressed us.

CONCLUSION: 4.5/5

The Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM exceeded all of our expectations. This is one heck of a nice LED light bulb. Providing that you need a 40 watt dimmable 180 degree LED light bulb, and like your light color extremely white with a subtle touch of natural pink, we can heartily recommend this bulb.

The Honeywell EarthTronics HWL1A198301BDIM is our new pick in very white 40 watt dimmable LED light bulbs. Well done Honeywell EarthTronics!
