PACKAGING: 2/5

Above: The EarthLED ThetaLux Warm White LED light bulb packaging

The packaging for the EarthLED LED Light Bulb ThetaLux warm white LED light bulb is nearly identical to the EarthLED ZetaLux 2 Pro we already reviewed.  In other words, excellent for material efficiency, terrible for structural integrity and product protection.

From our ZetaLux 2 Pro review; “Essentially the packaging is nothing more than a white cardboard box and a few stickers.  One of the three flaps that folds into the box has a cut out that ‘holds’ the bulb screw in place.”  What’s concerning is that the packaging is easy to crush and the bulb has a lot of play within the box.  As we said in the ZetaLux 2 Pro review, EarthLED needs to do better.

UPDATE 5/2/2012: EarthLED, contacted us regarding our critique of the EarthLED packaging with the following feedback:

“Regarding the packaging, all of our bulbs that you tested have a shatter proof-poly carb lense.  The bulbs have been tested from heights of over thirty feet and are shatter resistant.  Whether the product is fulfilled via Amazon or via our warehouses, the carton, plus an outside carton, plus cushion material is more than enough to protect the bulb.  In a retail situation, we would use packaging more similar to the other bulbs you tested.  I feel that mentioning the fact that the bulbs have a poly lense is important as we would never ship a glass bulb in such a package.” - Mark Costigliola, Co-Founder, EarthLED

PHYSICAL PRODUCT: 5/5

Above: The EarthLED ThetaLux Warm White LED light bulb

Looking at the EarthLED ThetaLux Warm White LED light bulb, it became clear that it’s going to start getting tough to tell some LED lights apart.  At first blush, the EarthLED ThetaLux Warm White LED light bulb looked like the LG 7.5W.  Of course the second look reveals the differences in the cooling fins and shape, but these two would be tough to distinguish at ten paces.

The EarthLED ThetaLux Warm White LED light bulb is another classic ice cream cone design with the white plastic lens at the top and the white metal cooling fins and screw at the bottom.  Nothing exciting here, except for the high quality fit and finish and solid feel of the product.  Unlike its packaging, the EarthLED bulb is physically very impressive.

LIGHT PATTERN: 180 Degree

Left to right: EarthLED ThetaLux Warm White, 60 watt incandescent, 60 watt CFL

The EarthLED ThetaLux has a 180 degree light pattern making it suitable for downward light applications. Due to the lack of omni-directional light, we do not recommend the EarthLED ThetaLux for table top lamps (as shown).

QUALITY OF LIGHT: 1/5

Left to right: EarthLED ThetaLux Warm White, 60 watt incandescent, 60 watt CFL

The EarthLED ThetaLux is both warmer than the reference 60 watt incandescent and green, similar to the reference 60 watt CFL.  This makes for a very unnatural color quality that’s too warm/yellow and green at the same time.  Based on its light quality, we cannot recommend the EarthLED ThetaLux.

WARRANTY

At the time this review, Amazon was offering the EarthLED ThetaLux LED light bulb for $17.49.  Based on the Amazon price, the EarthLED ThetaLux is a above average value in comparison to the 60 watt LED competition.

The EarthLED warranty on the EarthLED ThetaLux light bulb is three years.  This warranty term is below average compared with the 60 watt LED competition.

CONCLUSION: 1/5

We had high expectations of the EarthLED ThetaLux Warm White LED light bulb based on some favorable online consumer reviews.  Unfortunately, when compared side-by-side with our reference incandescent and competitive LED light bulbs, the ThetaLux just doesn’t measure up.  There are better choices to be had including the EcoSmart 400-674 and Sylvania 78823.
