The EcoSmart 400674 13-Watt A19 LED light bulb is designed to replace a non-dimmable 60 watt A19 incandescent light bulb for use in household lamps and other general domestic lighting applications.  The EcoSmart LED light bulb is mercury free.

PACKAGING: 2.5/5

The EcoSmart 400674 packaging presents an interesting design alternative to the plain box packaging that is so common among LED light bulb manufacturers.  The EcoSmart 400674 packaging is still a box, but with a large cutout revealing the bulb inside.  Unfortunately, the cut out also compromises the structural integrity of the box making it easy to crush the box from the sides.

On a more positive note, the packaging is very efficient in its use of cardboard and should be 100% recyclable.  The graphics couldn’t be more boring, but this isn’t a packaging design competition.  Overall, we are uncomfortable with the structural integrity of this box for the relatively fragile and premium product it contains.

PHYSICAL PRODUCT: 1.5/5

This bulb has an interesting design, but that’s not what called our attention when we pulled it from it’s boring box.  First, the different parts that make up the bulb don’t seem to fit well together.  The two-piece top lens doesn’t quite fit flush at the seam and it’s not firmly affixed to the “cone” of the bulb.  There’s a fair amount of play between the two parts allowing the lens to move separately from the base.  The base cooling fins also don’t quite fit the screw base right.

Overall, this bulb doesn’t have the high level of fit and finish most of the other LED bulbs exude.  We have to mark it down even further because some of the cooling fins appear to not be fully formed and are cracking at the outer most edges.  The bulb may be 100% operational, but physically it presents a real mess.  EcoSmart needs to do a lot better than this to stay competitive.

LIGHT PATTERN: Omni-Directional

The EcoSmart 400674 LED light bulb has an omni-directional light output and would be suitable for table top lamps and other general lighting applications.

QUALITY OF LIGHT: 4/5

Left to right: EcoSmart 400674, 60 watt incandescent, 60 watt CFL

The color quality of the EcoSmart 400674 immediately reminded us of our reference 60 watt Reveal incandescent bulb.  Like the Reveal, the color quality of the EcoSmart is cool and clear but remains natural.  In our LED light bulb evaluations, it’s been rare to see a cool LED that didn’t also look grey or unnatural.  If you’re looking for a Reveal style 60 watt equivalent LED light, the EcoSmart 400674 would be a good choice.

That said, we prefer the slightly warmer/yellow Sylvania 78823 which offers much of the clarity of the EcoSmart, but without the decidedly cool color balance.  This is purely preference between a cool/clear light (EcoSmart) and a warm/clear light (Sylvania).  Both have a natural light quality, but our preference is with the Sylvania.

VALUE AND WARRANTY: 4/5

At the time this review, Home Depot was offering the EcoSmart 400674 LED light bulb for $23.97.  Based on the Home Depot price, the EcoSmart 400674 is an above average value in comparison to the 60 watt LED competition.

The EcoSmart warranty for the EcoSmart 400674 LED light bulb is five years.  This warranty term is average compared to the 60 watt LED competition.

CONCLUSION: 4/5

If you’re looking for a 60 watt equivalent LED light bulb with omni-directional light and a cool but natural color quality, the EcoSmart 400674 would be an excellent choice.  It’s not our favorite bulb in the 60 watt equivalent group (that would be the Sylvania 78823) but it’s a winner none the less.  Recommended.

TEST RESULTS:

LED Light Review independently tested the EcoSmart 400674 LED light bulb with a Belkin Conserve Insight F7005 energy use monitor to measure the energy use (in watts), monthly and annual operation costs, and the monthly and annual amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by the bulb.  Here are the results of our tests:

Energy Used 16.2 watts
Monthly Operation Cost $1.35/month
Annual Operation Cost $16.49/year
Monthly CO2 produced 14.1 lbs/month
Annual CO2 produced 171 lbs/year

The monthly and annual cost and CO2 data are based on continuous LED bulb use, unspecified power generation sources (coal vs. nuclear vs. renewable, etc.), and unspecified electricity rates.  Please use this information for LED bulb comparison purposes only.
