PACKAGING: 5/5

Above: The GE 62180 Energy Smart LED light bulb packaging.

The exterior cardboard packaging for the GE LED soft white A19 light bulb took a licking somewhere along the delivery route to our home with a few indentations and tears (see packaging photos above).  Thankfully, the robust interior plastic packaging held the bulb firmly in place and the bulb was 100% functional when it arrived.

Although the packaging protected the bulb well, we would like to see GE develop packaging for its LED light bulbs that uses less paper and plastic but retains the necessary strength.  The clever minds that developed this bulb can certainly design more environmentally friendly packaging without compromising structural integrity.  Bring better packaging to your light, GE.

PHYSICAL PRODUCT: 5/5

Above: The GE 62180 Energy Smart LED light bulb.

With its white claw like cooling fins, the GE 62180 Energy Smart LED light bulb is an impressive modern looking light bulb design.  The GE’s entirely white exterior should also make this bulb aesthetically acceptable in table lamps and other exposed settings.

With the fins, the bulb is nearly identical to the size and shape of a standard incandescent light bulb ensuring compatibility with most household lamps.  In the hand, the GE 62180 feels solid and well built.  At four ounces, the bulb tips the scale at roughly four times the weight of a 60 watt incandescent, but is lighter than some of its LED light bulb competition.

LIGHT PATTERN: Omni-Directional

The GE 62180 LED light bulb has an omni-directional light output and would be suitable for table top lamps and other general lighting applications.

QUALITY OF LIGHT: 3/5

Left to right: GE 62180 Energy Smart LED, 40 watt incandescent, 40 watt CFL

When the GE 62180 Energy Smart, 9 Watt LED light bulb is side-by-side with our reference 40 watt incandescent light bulb, the GE 62180 looks brighter with a much cooler/whiter light color.  Light diffusion of this GE LED light bulb is excellent and very close to the nearly omnidirectional light diffusion of the 40 watt incandescent.  In this regard, the GE 62180 is the best we’ve seen from any LED light bulb.

Side-by-side with our favorite 40 watt equivalent LED bulbs, the Maxxima 380 and Philips 409938, the GE 62180 light color looked extremely white with a touch of grey.  While we strongly preferred the omnidirectional light pattern of the GE, the Philips and the Maxxima projected a significantly warmer and more natural light.

This is an easy one to call.  If you like cool and very white light, you’re going to love the GE.  If you like a little warmth with your light color, look at the Philips 409938 and the Maxxima 380.

WARRANTY

The GE warranty for the GE 62180 light bulb is ten years.  At ten years, the GE warranty term leads the industry for 40 watt equivalent LED bulbs.

CONCLUSION: 3/5

With it’s impressive product design, build quality, and ten year warranty, we strongly recommend the GE 62180 9 Watt LED light bulb for anyone looking for a cool white, omni-directional, non-dimmable LED light bulb.  Just be sure you really like a cool and very white light because that is exactly what you get.

If, like us, you prefer a little natural warmth with your indoor lighting, look to the Philips 409938 (omni-directional) or the Maxxima 380 (180 degree down light).
