PACKAGING: 4/5

Above: The Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP LED light bulb packaging

We were very happy to see Toshiba using a simple cardboard box to package their 8A19/27F-UP LED light bulb. The quality and sturdiness of the outside box is on par with the excellent packaging used by Philips for their L-Prize bulb.

Inside, Toshiba has used a corrugated cardboard insert that curls around the circumference of the bulb. Additionally, the bulb base is held vertically in place by a plastic base insert. This plastic base insert is so effective that you can stand the bulb outside of the box packaging with just the plastic base, like an ice cream cone holder.

Toshiba has done an excellent job with their packaging, but we would like to see them eliminate the use of plastic and move to protective cardboard base and lens inserts. The less plastic, the better.

PHYSICAL PRODUCT: 5/5

The Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP LED light bulb

The Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP LED light bulb is another classic ice cream cone design. one interesting variation is how the lens makes up the top 15% of the cone following the angle of the cone towards the top dome of the lens. This shape allows the Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP to be an omni-directional bulb and should make this product a good candidate for table top lamps. The cooling fins that run the circumference of the bulb are open at the point where they meet the top lens further allowing an omni-directional light pattern.

The fit and finish is excellent with tight seams and a solid feel in the hand. There is a very small amount of play between the top lens and cone base, but you really have to work the two sections to notice. This is one very well made LED light bulb.

With it’s incandescent-like shape and all white exterior, the Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP LED is not likely to offend in an exposed lamp fixture. Unlike some it’s competition that appear more like a bed sci-fi movie prop, the Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP LED looks like a subtle but high-tech light bulb. The Toshiba looks interesting, but it doesn’t call undue attention to itself.

Once set up in our lab, we immediately drew comparisons between the Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP and the Maxxima 380 and Sylvania 78823. All three bulbs are favorites at LED-Light-Review.com because of their natural and inviting warm light color, with a subtle hint of pink.

In fact, the primary quality of light difference between these three bulbs is not light color, but light output. The Sylvania 78823 is a 60-watt equivalent omni-directional with 810 lumens, the Toshiba is a 40-watt equivalent omni-directional with 450 lumens, and the Maxxima is a 40 watt equivalent with 380 lumens.

The other LED bulb that made for an interesting comparison is the LG 7.5W. Both the Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP and the LG 7.5W are 40-watt equivalents, but the 7.5W is noticeably brighter and more warm/yellow where the Toshiba is warm/subtly pink. Some folks will prefer the more warm/yellow light color of the LG 7.5W. We like them both, but prefer the Toshiba.

The perceived difference in brightness between the Toshiba and LG 7.5W is odd as both bulbs are listed at 450 lumens. That discrepancy aside, we are very pleased with the color quality of the Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP.

CONCLUSION: 4.5/5

We are very excited about the Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP and are giving it a firm recommendation for anyone who needs a dimmable omni-directional 40-watt equivalent A19 LED bulb and prefers a warm, natural light, with a touch of pink. The same inviting light color and quality is what made the Sylvania 78823 and Maxxima 380 a big hit here at LED-Light-Review.com and puts the Toshiba 8A19/27F-UP high on our recommendation list. Nice work Toshiba!
